What’s Changing? From 2024, you might need to set aside a few extra euros for your Venice adventure. A trial period for the tax payment system will take place for 30 days in 2024. Consequently, the actual implementation of the fee will commence in 2025 after evaluating the trial conducted in 2024. During the trial phase in 2024, the access fee will amount to 5 euros per day for entry into Venice from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. The trial days scheduled for 2024 are as follows:
April 25th to 30th
May 1st to 5th, 11th to 12th, 18th to 19th, and 25th to 26th
June 8th to 9th, 15th to 16th, 22nd to 23rd, and 29th to 30th
July 6th to 7th, and 13th to 14th.
Price of the Entrance Fee in Venice
The cost of the ticket will be 5 euros, but from next year it will be modulated from 3 to 10 euros according to the expected and actual crowding.
How to Pay the Venice Entry Fee?
The tourist and entry Fee for Venice will be payable through the dedicated website cda.ve.it/en/ which will issue a QR code to be presented during inspections.
Hence, there will be no counters, barriers, or turnstiles for tax control. Inspections will be conducted randomly in Venice by municipal agents.
Who’s Exempt? Good news for some!
To be exempt from this fee, it will suffice to spend just one night in a hotel, bed and breakfast, or apartment within the municipal territory of Venice, as the tax will already be included in the tourist tax.
Touristswho can provide evidence of booking a hotel room, bed and breakfast, or apartment in Venice (within the municipal territory: Venice, Murano, Burano, Lido, Pellestrina, Favaro Veneto, Mestre-Carpenedo, Chirignago-Zelarino, and Marghera). These tourists will have already paid a tourist tax related to their accommodation, and this payment will exempt them from the access tax to Venice. Exemption from payment of the tax for stays in Venice of more than one day
Residents of Venice and their relatives up to the 3rd degree of kinship.
Students enrolled in schools or universities in Venice.
Owners of accommodation in Venice (whether Italian or foreign)
Individuals traveling to Venice for professional reasons are automatically exempt.
Children under the age of 14 are also exempt from tax payment.
Passengers on tourist buses who pay the ZTL bus tax will also be exempt from the entry tax.
How does it work? Tax Exemption but Obligation to Register and Obtain QR Code Even if exempt from tax payment, individuals must still register (only applicable during the 2024 trial days and regardless of their stay date in 2025) to obtain the exemption QR code. Registration is conducted on the dedicated website cda.ve.it/en/ which will issue a QR code for presentation during inspections.
Purpose of the Venice Access Fee
While there are 4 million visitors who come to Venice and stay overnight, there are 5 times more day-trippers! Unfortunately, these 20 million day-trippers increase the costs of maintenance of the city but do not contribute to the increased expenses. This meant that Venetians, which are less than 50.000, had to bear the increased costs caused by 20 million non-contributing day trippers.
The primary aim of the fee is to manage tourist flows effectively to preserve Venice and ensure a pleasant experience for visitors. Additionally, the tax aims to alleviate the costs currently borne solely by Venetians for maintaining the city and its services, which include:
Household waste services (costing 41 million euros annually)
Maintenance and repair of the paving (Masegno) on Venice’s streets
