Districts of Venice 

Venice is a city filled with endless photo opportunities. Each district offers unique scenery, whether it’s narrow alleyways, historic architecture, or charming canals. As a Venice photographer, I’m always on the lookout for the perfect spot to capture a love story, portrait, or family photo. 

In this article, I’ll take you on a tour of the best districts in Venice for a photoshoot and share my favorite locations to capture those unforgettable moments. 

Venice has  six districts, or “sestieri”: San Marco, San Polo, Santa Croce, Cannaregio, Castello, and Dorsoduro. Each district has its own unique character and attractions, and they are all worth exploring for visitors to the city. We’ll look at the unique features of each district, and highlight some of the best locations within them for different types of photos.

1. San Marco District

The San Marco district is one of the most famous and recognizable neighborhoods in Venice. Located in the heart of the city, it’s known for its grand buildings, ornate bridges, and stunning views of the Grand Canal. San Marco is home to the iconic St. Mark’s Basilica, which is a popular location for portrait photos, with its intricate mosaics and stunning architecture. 
The narrow streets of San Marco are also perfect for capturing intimate moments, with their charming architecture and romantic alleyways.

2. San Polo District

The San Polo district is another popular location for photographers in Venice. The district is home to some of the most famous landmarks in Venice, such as the Rialto Bridge and the Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari church. The Rialto Bridge is one of the most iconic bridges in Venice, and it’s an excellent location for photos. The bridge offers a stunning view of the Grand Canal and is perfect for both love story and portrait photography.

3. Santa Croce District

The Santa Croce district is located in the western part of Venice and is known for its charming canals and narrow streets. This district is less touristy than some of the others in Venice, making it a great location for a more intimate photoshoot.
One of my favorite spots in Santa Croce is the Fondamenta dei Tolentini, a charming canal lined with colorful buildings and historic bridges. It’s the perfect spot for a love story photoshoot or a romantic portrait session.

4. Cannaregio District

The Cannaregio district is a fantastic location for a photo shoot in Venice. The district is one of the most peaceful and quiet districts in Venice, and it offers a unique and charming atmosphere that is perfect for photos. The district is home to the Jewish Ghetto, the first ghetto in the world, and has a rich history and culture that is perfect for family photos.

5. Castello District

The Castello district is located in the eastern part of Venice and is known for its historic buildings and charming alleyways. This district is less touristy than some of the others, offering a more authentic Venetian experience.
One of my favorite spots in Castello is the Via Garibaldi, a charming street lined with unique shops and colorful buildings. It’s the perfect spot for a love story photoshoot or a family photo.

6. Dorsoduro District

Dorsoduro is a district located in the southern part of Venice and is known for its beautiful canals and historic buildings. This district is less touristy than some of the others, offering a more authentic Venetian experience.
The Dorsoduro sestiere is also great locations for photoshoots
